Missing Teeth: How Many Teeth Can a Dental Bridge Replace?

dental bridge East Orange, NJ

A dental bridge is a great tooth replacement option that many people consider when they have missing teeth. Unlike dentures, dental bridges are fixed in place so that there is no sliding or bulkiness hanging out in the mouth. On the flip side, a dental bridge can replace more than one tooth while only requiring one fixture. Many people are curious to know how many teeth can actually be replaced using a dental bridge. Ready to find out?

Dental bridges to replace missing teeth

Below is an overview of dental bridges, including how many teeth can be replaced with them.

Dental bridges

A dental bridge is a dental restoration that is fixed in place. It is used to replace missing teeth by connecting an artificial tooth definitively to an adjacent tooth, whether it be natural or artificial. Oftentimes, the artificial teeth that are paired with bridges are dental crowns, made of either porcelain or composite resin. Additionally, a dental bridge can be used in conjuction with dental implants, thus creating a very strong tooth replacement.

The replacement process

When a dental bridge is used for tooth replacement, the general dentist will cement the fixture to the teeth that are on either side of the gap, whether they are artificial or natural. The cement or bonding will hold the dental bridge in place so that it can effectively bridge the gap between the teeth. The entire process takes a bit of time because the bridge has to be custom-made, however, the commitment is often worth it as it allows patients to eat, smile and speak normally.

How many teeth can be replaced?

A dental bridge can be used to replace anywhere from one to four teeth, depending on the patient's needs. However, it is most common that one to two teeth will be replaced. In some rare cases, a bridge can replace more teeth than four; however, there are a few factors that play into it.

There have to be enough teeth present in the mouth to connect to with dental crowns. Additionally, the anchoring teeth have to be in really good shape, meaning they have to be strong and healthy. If they are not then the dental bridge is at risk of becoming loose after a while. Another factor that plays into it is that the dental bridge may not be as stable if replacing more than two teeth. A gap that has four missing teeth would require a large dental bridge. The larger that the dental bridge extends, the less stable it will be. So to conclude, it is possible for a dental bridge to replace multiple missing teeth, but it may be risky, and the patient has to be in optimal health in order for it to work appropriately.
