What Is Recurrent Decay Around a Dental Filling?

dental filling East Orange, NJ

Your dentist can use a dental filling to fill a hole in your teeth. Fillings are used to replace a tooth structure that has deteriorated because of decay. A dental filling is also used to repair a broken or worn tooth. There are many reasons why your dental filling might need to be replaced. Recurrent decay is one reason to replace a filling. Keep reading to learn more about this oral health issue.

About recurrent decay

After a tooth has had decay, the dental filling is designed to prevent future decay. However, the dental restoration may “leak” bacteria. This can cause decay under crowns and fillings, which is known as recurrent decay. A filling can chip, wear or crack because of the constant pressure that chewing puts on the teeth.

Grinding the teeth also places stress on restorations. This can leave a gap between the restoration and the tooth. It is difficult for a patient to tell if the filling has worn down. However, a dentist can identify any issues with the dental filling during a regular checkup.

Diagnosing recurrent decay

Regular dental exams can help the dentist find any issue with the dental filling early. The dentist will be able to determine if the dental filling is intact or if it has cracked. The dentist will use an explorer, which is an instrument to detect worn spots around the filling. If the seal between the enamel and the filling has broken down, then food particles and bacteria can enter.

A toothbrush is unable to completely remove the food particles and bacteria. This is when the tooth can develop additional decay under the filling. If the decay is not treated, then it can cause an infection in the dental pulp. In extreme cases, the entire tooth can be lost.

An abscessed tooth may also result. An abscess is a pocket of pus that has formed around the root of the infected tooth. The infection will not heal itself. Instead, an endodontist or general dentist must treat it.

A dental X-ray can evaluate the health of the tooth. It can detect any decay that is under a dental filling or between a tooth. If a filling is failing or there is decay, the dentist can replace the fillings. If there is a lot of recurrent decay, a crown may be used to replace the filling. The tooth may not be strong enough to support a new filling.

If you notice that your filling is cracked or there is a pain in your tooth, you should see a dentist. It may be a sign of recurrent decay. That way, the dentist can detect and treat the issue early. If the decay is near the pulp of your tooth, you may feel pain. Getting help immediately can prevent the issue from worsening. It can also prevent you from having to have extensive or costly procedures, such as an extraction.
